Trying out “Nue Ground” in what has become the “new normal” seems apt. Particularly given the ethos of this place, located on Clapham Old Town’s neighbourhood street of Abbeville Road. Appropriate for the “new normal” (whatever that is), at its core is sustainability, ethical sourcing and healthy, fresh produce, without compromising on taste and at least of, good coffee (and cake)!

From the founders of Brickwood – another (South London) brunch and coffee haven – Nue Ground has similarly become a popular spot for brunch since opening last year. And it’s no surprise – as soon as you walk through the doors, you’re greeted by a delicious (and very instagrammable) display of cakes and patisseries – all very tempting.
A lot of thought has gone into this new venue with the lovely local potters North Street Potters providing the crockery which sits on the sustainable furniture. Materials are reclaimed and recycled, and 100% of all table water sold goes to environmental causes. The staff are also super welcoming and make you feel at home.
The menu is full of solid options (including vegan), with all-day breakfast offerings available until 3pm, lunch and dinner plates and bowl from 12pm, plus did I mention their cakes? In the evening, they have wine from small ethical producers plus grazing platters (including vegan options), flatbreads and sharing boards.

I opted for “falafel” (£10), which came with Israeli cous cous, beetroot labneh, sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes and an irresistible seasoning of zaatar and mint. The verdict? The bowl tasted as good as it looked. Although not a usual fan of cous cous, this Israeli take of the (giant) grain had a great al dente bite and was well seasoned with fresh herbs and of course the Middle East chart-topping spice, zaatar. Absolutely delicious. The labneh was creamy, fresh and generous spooned onto the bowl. Worthy of finishing by the spoon and paired irresistibly well with the baked and also well-size falafel.

All in all, Nue Ground will certainly become a new local haunt of more – whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner or (more regularly) coffee and a “plant-based” cake. To be continued…
