Beauty Killed The Beast: Head here for excellent cocktails, design inspiration, good music and a popular brunch. With friendly service and a laid-back atmosphere, it feels more relaxed than some of the bars downtown in central Athens and very hip. Though becoming more known, this spot feels like a hidden gem reserved for those “in-the-know’!
Rakor: This spot has a super homely vibe and inventive food, with a nice indoors/outdoors experience overlooking the pedestrian street. The vegetarian and vegan choices are particularly excellent. Half a mile from the Acropolis in the arty area of Keramikos, it’s a popular spot with foodies.
Seychelles: A place frequented by Athenians, cosy bar-restaurant Seychelles has a killer menu and reasonable prices. Not only are the clientele and the interiors super hip but the menu is creative in an understated way. Think simple Greek dishes elevated: chickpeas with feta and mint; dakos salads with carob rusks; Portbello mushrooms paired with thyme and rosemary; and a delicious looking pappardelle. For the best view of the kitchen flames, nab a seat at the bar counter. Whilst Monistaraki/Plaka is crammed full of top notch wine bars and restaurants, sometimes it’s worth venturing beyond the crowded, touristy city centre to find haunts with a more local vibe.
