To eat

Owing to its position in the Mediterranean, the food scene in Athens is a melting pot of cultures and reinvention.  Whilst there are plenty of timeless Greek tavernas, some of the new spots springing up pull together flavours from the Middle East and Asia, whilst retaining local roots by using the finest of Greek produce.  Whilst Greek food  – like much of the Mediterranean diet – shines in its simplicity, with fresh, seasonal ingredients accentuated by olive oil and salty cheese (usually feta!), that doesn’t mean dining in Athens is predictable.  New dining spots are reinventing Greek dishes in a creative way.  Here’s a (long) lowdown on some of my favourite spots, by area:

Monastiraki/Plaka

Kolonaki

Pagrati

Petralona, Koukaki and Exarchia

Gazi

Chalandri and around

Metaxourgio

Psirri

Kifissia

Marousi

Glyfada
